January Day Trip

It had been a while since Dale and I jumped in the car and headed out to explore a new part of Iowa. We have enjoyed seeing different areas and were motivated but several lists. Yesterday seemed like a good day to drive East. The forecast was good but by the time we got to Clinton and saw this "lighthouse" on the shore of the Mississippi River it was snowing.
Although we had been to the swinging bridge in Louisa County, it was dark the first time. Since it was 40 degrees and clear we decided that it was a great place to stretch our legs. It really is fun to walk across the bridge and it was great to be outdoors.

We did make headway on a couple of our lists. We stopped in four county seats so that Dale could photograph the courthouses. We now have visited and photographed 92 of the 100 courthouses in Iowa! Dale does most of the photography and I walk but when we stopped in Clinton I walked and photographed.
Muscatine was a great stop too. We ate at the Woodfire Grille which is in an old button factory. The list of "1oo Things to Eat in Iowa Before You Die" included the meatloaf so we shared a meatloaf dinner seated at a booth near the window overlooking the Mississippi. A bald eagle gave us a beautiful show when he came up from the river to fly past the building carrying a fish in his claws. It was a beautiful way to spend a Saturday in January and it was fun to get back to our "lists."

Thirty Years!

Happy Birthday, Jay James!
It's just amazing to me that my baby boy is thirty today! Thirty years old. . . wow!
Thirty years ago today I gave birth to a 9 pound 9 ounce baby on Superbowl Sunday and my life was changed forever. I have been a mother for thirty years. . . (again, WOW!)
Happy Birthday, Jay! I love you!

Lots of Yarn

One of the things that I love about knitting is yarn!! I love the colors and textures. Yarn shops are beautiful. Even the yarn aisles at Hobby Lobby and Michael's are pretty. For Christmas I got a gift of money to be used for yarn. I usually only buy yarn for my next project but it was fun to sort through the aisles, watch the sales and get lots of yarn for my gift. I have started a project with the teal yarn already. This is a gift that will certainly last all winter long. Thank you, Mary and Marion!

Mohawks in Des Moines

Last weekend the Mason City Mohawks traveled to Des Moines to play hockey. We got to see a couple of very good hockey games but seeing Jake is the fun part for me. Dale took lots of photos of the hockey players and sent me this one of Jake. Dan, Jill, Scott, Kaley and Brecken made the trip to Des Moines for the Saturday game. I just love hanging out with all of them and getting to see how much Brecken is changing.

Jigsaw

When the ice hit on New Year's Eve and we opened a jigsaw puzzle it seemed like it would never be completed. I questioned the wisdom of one thousand pieces of jigsaw on a coffee table but we kept at it. Dale and I have different systems but they work well together. He is much more systematic, imagine that! We finished last night and enjoyed the process. It was especially fun since it was Sausalito and we plan to visit there this summer. The puzzle was purchased long before the trip was planned but it was fun to think about the trip while working the puzzle. I don't do a puzzle every winter but I do enjoy it so I just may have to buy a new one to tuck away for the next time!

Welcoming 2011

I always prefer a quiet New Year's Eve and was not disappointed this year. A thin coating of ice on the city earlier in the day made for a cozy evening at home. I dug out the puzzle that I got for Christmas 2009 and Dale and I spent hours working on the project in the glow of the Christmas lights and fireplace. Dinner was a chicken parmesan and a chocolate treat. I googled "desserts for two" looking for one that did not require a trip to the store. I cut this recipe in half and had a yummy treat in a little crock. Thanks to Dale for taking the photographs while I was cooking and puzzling. Happy New Year to everyone! I wish good things for all in 2011.
