Early Spring Gardening

My garden work has started! Last weekend I started some seeds that I had collected last fall. I filled tiny clay pots and a cardboard egg carton with soil and seeds. They are lined up on a retired cookie sheet near the window in the guest room. A few have started to sprout.

This project allows me to "medicate" my spring fever and save money at the same time. I also enjoy the idea of starting tiny seeds and seeing flowers mature this summer. This is one of those things that I loved to do with my children when they were little; one of those things that I decided I would enjoy doing again even now that there are no children in my home. It's like stomping in rain puddles. I have discovered that it's still fun to do, even if everyone is all grown up.

AARP for Me?

How do they find us? I heard that I would be getting mail from AARP as my fiftieth birthday got close. My friends have gotten the mailing. Dale got the mailing too but somehow when it showed up at my house with my name, it made me chuckle. Yes, they found me. It's almost time for me to turn fifty and they knew it. How do they find out? Who tells? If it's truly an association for retired persons, why don't I get to retire? I have so many questions but none of them really require an answer. I guess this is a milestone of middle age so it's time to celebrate! I hear that there are wonderful discounts too!

Road Maps

I like maps. I think I have always liked maps. During elementary school I always looked forward to the unit on maps. When Jay was little, I had a map of the USA on his wall. We put gold stars on the places that he had been. It was a teaching tool and hopefully instilled some desire to travel or explore. Later I made copies of a map with just the state borders and no labels. We used it to learn the states. Ashley and I used copies to color in the states that we had visited. I still like to keep up with that map. Dale and I have used that method to determine which states neither of us have visited.
I am sure that my love of travel and exploration have added to my appreciation for maps. On our recent vacation, I picked up the maps that are photographed here. It's been fun to leave them on my coffee table this week and look back at the places we enjoyed. Over the years I have found that maps make great wrapping paper too! It's not just because it's free wrapping paper. I enjoy finding a map that might remind the recipient of a place that they love. Maps are beautiful and can be a great tool for navigation and to jog my memory. Yes, I know you can find maps on the internet but I love the paper in my hands. Of course, they must be folded correctly, as they were originally folded, after each use!

Southern Vacation

We had a great vacation! If you tend to be bored by looking at other people's vacation photos, you may want to skip this entry. We saw many gorgeous things and explored lots of territory, so there are lots of photos. I have just selected a fraction of them, but there are plenty! Our destination for this trip was determined by the Nascar schedule. We decided that we would go to the race in Atlanta. From that point, we branched out to explore that part of the country. As I mentioned before we stopped in Memphis on the way then traveled territory that was new to us as we moved toward Atlanta. We ended up driving more than 3,500 miles. It's a good thing that we both love to road trip together!

After race day our next stop was the Okefenokee Swamp in southern Georgia. We knew that a swamp was probably not a top vacation destination for most, but that means we did not have to deal with Spring Break traffic! We both enjoy learning about other environments, plants and animals. It's great to see places that are so different from home. It was another gorgeous day. The weather was perfect again. We were in a swamp with no bugs, lots of sunshine and temperatures close to eighty degrees. It was a beautiful day.

J.T. was our swamp guide when we took the boat tour. This man was a native growing up on the swamp and learning to navigate from his grandfather. He had many colorful stories and a unique dialect. This alligator was close to our boat. I did not use the zoom on the camera! It was another fun photography day for both of us.

St. Mary's in southern Georgia was our first stop at the Georgia coast. Again the sun was shining and the temperatures were perfect to enjoy the ocean breeze and the blooming azaleas. I love seeing palm trees and tropical vegetation. Traveling into Spring was wonderful. The colors and flowers were gorgeous. It was a wonderful place to stroll around on a vacation afternoon!

Since we were so close to the Florida border we decided to add it to our vacation. Dale and I had never been to the ocean together so it was very exciting for me to get the chance to take off our shoes, feel the water and waves on our feet and pick up seashells together. The sun was setting as we drove across Jacksonville so we took our first chance to get to the shore and parked near a public access in Neptune Beach. It was gorgeous and with the evening breeze the temperatures were at least ten degrees cooler on the beach.

St. Simon Island was one of my favorite spots, but my list of favorites is rather long. Near the lighthouse and overlooking the beach was a large community center with a very long front porch. This porch was lined with wooden rocking chairs. It looked like a great place to spend an hour or two, but we were busy strolling and exploring the town. We found a great little place for lunch very close to the beach. The sweet potato fries were great. Adults and children wandered in to get ice cream on their way to or from the beach. The town had a wonderful small town feel with a beautiful beach. We had a wonderful time watching dolphins and pelicans.

Jekyll Island is an Island off the coast of Georgia that has a restriction of only 35 percent development. It seemed like a good place to spend time. We walked around the historical section and pier before finding our hotel and beach. These chairs were at the historical inn. They seem to invite people to relax in the shade and sip sweet tea. There were very proper people dressed completely in white playing croquet on the front lawn. It was like walking by a scene in an old movie.

This tree has been sculpted by the wind off the Atlantic Ocean. It reaches toward our hotel which was on the beach. Even though it was a gorgeous day the tree tells of a very powerful force that must be quite common.

We got up early to see the sun rise on Jekyll Island. It was wonderful to be on the beach as the light and colors just began to fill the sky. Dale took lots of photos. I took a few and spent time walking in the surf and picking up seashells. It was peaceful and quiet. Even the seagulls were much more calm than they had been the afternoon before.

From the other side of Jekyll Island at Driftwood Beach, we had watched the sun set the night before. The sunset was beautiful and we were entertained by very active dolphins not far from the shore. It was getting pretty dark before we were ready to walk away from the beauty of the ocean that night. I saw more dolphins on this trip than I have seen in my entire life. Dale and I were impressed on several occasions and completely enjoyed the special treat.

If there is a lighthouse I feel the need to take a photograph! This one is located on Tybee Island. I do love lighthouses.

Tybee Island, near Savannah seemed like a great stop. We asked directions from the security guard at the Savannah visitor's center. He gave very simple instructions and told us that Tybee was his sanctuary. He loved to go out there, sit on a swing and drink a few brews when he wants to get away. Dale and I walked out on the pier and spent some time sitting in the swing. We saw some spring break kids and enjoyed the atmosphere of the little town and beach.

Savannah Georgia was a city that was high on our list of places to see while visiting the South. We were not disappointed by the trees draped in Spanish moss, blooming azaleas or city parks and green spaces. We drove around a bit and walked quite a while to see the historical part of the city.

Hilton Head was on our general path so we decided to stop by just so I could see the light house. As the boys at the visitor center said, "It's THE famous lighthouse." When we arrived, I was sure we must be at the wrong place. It was a very small lighthouse surrounded by buildings, shops and pavement. But this was the famous one. It just looks different in person. We did enjoy a stroll around the marina with gorgeous boats, but did not stay very long here.

Folly Island was a fun stop. Our main goal was to find the lighthouse. It was our last visit to the shore and it was very windy that day. The walk to the beach was about half a mile which felt further with the strong wind and my full bladder! I know, should have gone first, but I didn't. It was my favorite lighthouse of the trip but I didn't take the time to get a good photo. I could blame my little point and shoot camera but I think that this was more an issue of my patience!

Charleston, South Carolina is an incredible city. We had planned to stop by there but did not realize what a treasure we would find. We truly enjoyed walking down the cobble streets and exploring the waterfront area. We walked through the market and watched the Gullah women weaving their traditional sweetgrass baskets. The city is rich with history and very alive today. We also found a local restaurant to enjoy an authentic southern meal. I had purloo for the first time!

Although I have not included photos we also visited historical places including Ft. Pulaski and some other Civil War sites. We visited several state capitals (Georgia, South Carolina and Illinois) and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum (Illinois.) Dale is very interested in history and has lots of knowledge to share with me. I do enjoy learning and he is very patient with my questions. My retention is not great so I am sure that I repeated some questions from last year, but he still answers me. Even if my memory fades, I enjoy the learning process. Sometimes I do miss my memory but I guess at this age, the brain is getting full! I do have great memories of this vacation and plenty of photos also. Now Dale and I are already planning for the next vacation!

We are home!

I am transitioning back to real life. Vacation is over. We got home on Sunday and I go back to work tomorrow, Tuesday. Today is a luxury. It happens to be my regularly scheduled day off so I get to transition slowly. I unpacked, did laundry and restocked the refrigerator. Fortunately the perfect weather seemed to follow us home. It's 72 degrees here today. This photo was taken on the Georgia coast on St. Simon Island. I have a few seashells on my patio, photographs, refrigerator magnets and great memories but vacation is over for now. Dale and I are already talking about the possibilities for the next trip. I love to travel and enjoyed this trip lots. I will post more photos very soon.

Homeward Bound

As we head northwest toward Iowa, the weather is changing. I took this photo yesterday as we drove through the Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee. It was raining lightly and 36 degrees. The ice on the trees was left from the previous night. The roads were not slippery but it was a kick of reality. These were the first raindrops of the trip but the sun did peek out later in the day.
I wore my flip flops for nine days, but probably should have worn them just eight days! Today I pull out the shoes and socks as we head closer to home but I will enjoy the tan line from the flip flops, a reminder of the warm sunshine and gorgeous ocean beaches. It has been a wonderful vacation in every way but it's time to head back to our reality!

Atlantic Ocean

We have spent the last several days enjoying the Atlantic Ocean! We have been on beaches, islands, intracoastal waterways, piers and boardwalks. It's been wonderful to walk the shores getting our feet wet and picking up shells. We were on the coast in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. We saw sunsets and a sunrise. I love being near the ocean; the sights, sounds and smells.

We have also been without internet for the last couple of nights and been too tired to do much about blogging anyway. I will catch up with more photos and fun details very soon. We have taken lots of photos. Dale takes even more photos than I do while on vacation. The weather has been perfect without a single drop of rain. I love vacation!

Nascar Fans?

This is a Nascar fan, one of my favorites! I do love several Nascar fans; my brother, brother-in-law and a couple of nephews. (My son is NOT a Nascar fan!) Although I was disappointed when I found out that Dale was truly a Nascar fan, I have adapted well. Sunday I went to my second Nascar Sprint Cup race. Dale and I spent nine and a half hours at Atlanta Motor Speedway. It was a fun day together, even if it was a race.

This is a fan couple, both of them completely decked out in their favorite gear. The man is obviously a fan of the #18 M&M car. Although it's difficult to see through the Nascar backpack, the woman is dressed completely in #48 gear. These are serious race fans who seem to be buying more Nascar products.

This is a fan and one in training. The mother and son were dressed in matching gear for #88. The little boy showed little interest in the race or in his ear protection. He took them off for most of the race. I would worry about hearing loss. This is one loud event!!

These are NOT Nascar fans!!
My friend, Karen drove down from S.C. on Sunday to meet up with us at the race. She had never been to a race and has never been a fan, but Karen and I had not seen each other for almost ten years so she was willing to brave the Nascar scene so that we could get together. It was great to see Karen and talk (yell) with each other. Once Karen got the proper ear protection she was set for the big race. We need to protect our hearing! I should have done a better job of protecting my skin, but missed my chest when applying my sun screen. Thanks for coming, Karen! It was great to catch up.

Home of the Braves

Saturday was our day in Atlanta. We had a few things on the list including the state capital, Centennial Olympic Park and The Varsity, World's Largest Drive-in. It was fun to see those things and I expect that Dale will blog about them in more detail with photos when he gets caught up. For me the best part of the day was our visit to Turner Field, home of the Atlanta Braves. This is the first time that I have visited a MLB park and not been able to watch a game, but the season doesn't start until April and we were in Georgia now. So we took the tour and got to see the ball park. It's very different without the fans, food vendors, music and game, but we got a feel for the park and their traditions. Behind us in this photo you can see the huge coke bottle that shoots fireworks after a home run or win and the new Chick-fil-A cow that does the chop with the fans. I have decided that this visit does count as one of my trips to a ball park so now I have visited 11 MLB parks and have a baseball from each one. It was a good day in Atlanta.

On the Road Again

We have covered lots of miles and six states in three days. We didn't really spend much time in some of these states but try to take the time to see something interesting while visit. Part of our trip took us across the northern part of Mississippi. We saw a sign and decided to make a detour to see the Natchez Trace. It was nice to be out in the woods on a gorgeous day and interesting to learn about the ancient trail. We did go into the visitor center, watch a very short film and get directions to get to a segment of the "old trace." We walked less than half a mile, but it was nice to get a feel for what it might have been like for travelers many generations before us.
Neither Dale nor I had ever been to Alabama so we planned to drive across part of the state on our way to Georgia. After a couple of very frustrating hours fighting Birmingham traffic we were happy to find Kymulga covered bridge and gristmill. It was picturesque and peaceful after city traffic. We didn't stay long because it was close to sunset and we were close to Talladega, Alabama, home to a Nascar track that we thought it might be fun to see. We did get a chance to see the town but it was after dark when we found the speedway, much closer to the neighboring town of Lincoln. Our search did take us on some very interesting back roads of Alabama with some very noisy frogs. I do think we got a bit of a feel for the state of Alabama, but it was a short visit.

Walkin' in Mempis

It was my first time in Memphis, Dale's first time in Memphis and a wonderful 70 degree evening. We had a short list. I wanted to look at Graceland, home of Elvis, but not go in and take the tour. I also wanted to explore Beale Street, listen to the music and eat Memphis BBQ. Dale was in agreement so that's exactly what we did. It's so great how we can agree about our travels! He had also heard about tamales in Memphis so we ordered those too when we ate at Blues City Cafe. All the food was wonderful! The evening was beautiful and it was fun to explore a new city, even briefly.

Souvenir Magnets

My refrigerator has transformed over the years. It was full of photographs or the artwork of children for many years. Now it's home to my souvenir magnets. I started my collection more than ten years ago. Magnets make a very inexpensive souvenir and require very little time shopping. I really do not like to waste much travel time shopping. It's a very visible way to display vacation memories in a small space. During my first couple of years in Des Moines, I spent forty hours a week in a gray cubicle. My magnets lived on the gray metal cabinet and brightened my work week during that time. Now my magnets are back at home. Last year when we traveled to D.C. and Virginia I added several magnets, even a few from race tracks. Is that crazy? That I would go to a race track on vacation? Yes, I think so as well. But Dale has fun so I enjoy my time with him. I am so looking forward to gathering more souvenir magnets in the near future!

I also feel the need to mention my decorative display on top of the refrigerator. I have always felt that the top should be uncluttered. OK, I think most things should be uncluttered! But ten years ago for my fortieth birthday, the grease catcher and salt & pepper set were a gift from my good friend, Ann. She and I has seen this in a hardware store over the years and laughed at the fact that it must have been on the shelves for about twenty years. This was a small town store and the inventory did not turn over often. It made me laugh when she actually bought it for me and brought it to my party. It still makes me smile and deserves the place of honor. Someday I may give it to my brother Dan, who envied the well designed grease catcher!

Spring Break Season

I have some great memories of Spring Breaks. When I was a kid we never traveled for Spring Break but when my kids started school I did take advantage of the week long break to travel and get away from the last days of Iowa winters. Now that I do not have kids in school, Spring Break is much less relevant.
There were a couple of trips to Florida when the kids were little, but San Diego quickly became a family favorite for Spring Break. Ashley and I enjoyed walking along the beach or biking on the boardwalk. Jay enjoyed laying on the balcony of the hotel room listening to the radio with headphones. We did explore Sea World and La Jolla but enjoyed much of our time near the Catamaran, our favorite place to stay.
I offered each of them a trip; just the two of us, when they graduated. Jay replied, "With you? No thanks!" Aren't sons wonderful? He did save me lots of money on that one! Ashley took me up on the offer. We traveled to Puerto Vallarta for Spring Break during her senior year of high school and to the Bahamas for her senior year of college. They were both great trips. I bought the necklace in the photo from a man named Pablo on the beach in Mexico. It's a nice souvenir and memory of the warm sun and wonderful relaxation.
